We\u2019ll find a small town and grab a meal at a local restaurant. We\u2019ve found some real gems over the years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t have a typical order, and usually get whatever on the menu calls to me. But the one thing I can never seem to resist is French Onion soup. There\u2019s just something about the rich broth, sweet onions, and gooey cheese that always hits the spot!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This French onion chicken skillet takes the best parts of French onion soup and transforms it into a simple yet filling weeknight dinner. Thinner breasts will cook faster. Mine here were HUGE so I split them crosswise before cooking.<\/li><li><strong>Chicken or Beef Broth.<\/strong> Your choice &#8212; use whatever you have on hand! Don\u2019t worry about cooking them all the way through right now, since they\u2019ll finish cooking in that delicious onion gravy. Right now, you just want to get some color on them. Transfer the chicken to a plate and save for later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next, caramelize your onions.<\/strong> This is the longest step of this recipe, but I shared some tips below that will help speed things up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your onions are soft and jammy, <strong>add the flour and seasoning. <\/strong>Cook for a minute or two, then <strong>whisk in the broth<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Return the chicken to the pan<\/strong> and bring everything to a simmer until the chicken is cooked through. (Use a<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3jqbfRL\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow\"> meat thermometer<\/a> to get the perfect temperature and avoid overcooking)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Smother with the shredded cheese and pop the pan under the broiler<\/strong> for a few minutes until bubbling and browned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"onions\"><strong>How to caramelize onions quickly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Properly caramelizing onions can take a really long time, which I don\u2019t usually have.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The secret to speeding things up? Add a pinch of baking soda to the pan!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onions-usa.org\/onionista\/faster-caramelized-onions-with-baking-soda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changes the Ph of the onions<\/a>, helping them soften and brown more quickly. It also brings out their natural sweetness. Adding a splash of water to the pan during the first few minutes of cooking also helps the onions soften more quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background\"><strong>Pro-Tip:<\/strong> If you\u2019re really impatient, you can also make a big batch of caramelized onions (I love this method for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthy-delicious.com\/slow-cooker-caramelized-onions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slow cooker caramelized onions<\/a>) and freeze them for later. Then just pull some out when you want to make this chicken!
